01 / THE MISSION

A Higher Responsibility. A Distinction Earned.

This is primarily a leadership development program. Selected Cadets work directly for the Ranger instructors, helping develop and train the basic Cadet Ranger School class. While learning additional skills, they develop their own leadership abilities by passing on their experience and assisting with instruction under the Ranger instructors’ supervision.

XMC CADET RANGER LEADERSHIP

The Tab Is the Foundation.
The Beret Is Earned.

Graduates of Cadet Ranger School earn the XMC Cadet Ranger Tab. The British-style brown beret is a further distinction, awarded after successful completion of both Cadet Ranger School and the Cadet Ranger Leadership Course, with the Course Director’s recommendation.

CRLC is a separate leadership practicum: Cadets demonstrate their ability to develop, motivate and lead others while supporting Ranger training. Participation or payment does not automatically confer the beret.

A FRIENDSHIP CARRIED FORWARD

Our Brother from Across the Pond.

Regimental Sergeant Major Ray Lee in formal evening dress
Regimental Sergeant Major Ray Lee
XMC Hall of Fame · Inducted posthumously in 2022

The Cadet Ranger beret carries a connection that reaches beyond the achievement it represents. Through the efforts of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Ray Lee, a longtime friend of XMC, the program received written confirmation from British Army Headquarters that its Cadets and adult instructors could wear the British Army khaki beret as part of their normal uniform.

RSM Lee devoted his life to service. After a military career in the British Army, from which he retired as a Regimental Sergeant Major, he continued developing young leaders as a Major in the Royal Army Cadets. He commanded a local Cadet unit and led an international exchange that brought 25 British Cadets to the United States. COL Joseph M. Land, Sr., XMC, served as his stateside point of contact, beginning a friendship that would become part of Camp Liberty’s history.

RSM Lee served on staff at Camp Liberty during two Training Missions. His distinctive humor, warmth and dedication to Cadets—regardless of their country of birth—left a lasting impression. He was a friend, an officer and a gentleman: our brother from across the pond.

RSM Lee passed away in 2021 and was posthumously inducted into the Extreme Military Challenge! Hall of Fame in 2022. We are proud that our Cadet Rangers honor his friendship and carry that relationship forward whenever they wear the beret.

British Army Headquarters Authorization.

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE · 12 APRIL 2016

The letter confirms that there are no restrictions on XMC Cadets and adult instructors wearing the British Army khaki beret as part of their normal uniform. XMC’s course-completion and award requirements determine when a Cadet earns the distinction.
