Supporting Families in Support of Challengers
At Extreme Military Challenge! (XMC), we believe that developing young leaders is a team effort. While our Military Cadre and civilian staff are responsible for training Challengers at Camp Liberty, parents and families play an equally important role before, during, and after each training cycle.
That is why we established the Family Readiness Group (FRG) – Extreme Military Challenge! – Camp Liberty, Inspired by the Family Readiness Groups found throughout the United States military, the FRG serves as a central resource for parents, guardians, alumni families, and supporters of our Challengers.

What is the Family Readiness Group?

Throughout the U.S. Armed Forces, Family Readiness Groups provide communication, information, and mutual support for the families of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen. Strong families contribute to mission success by ensuring service members can focus on their duties knowing their loved ones are informed and supported.
While Extreme Military Challenge! is a civilian leadership development program—not a military unit—we have adopted this proven concept because we recognize that informed, engaged families contribute significantly to a Challenger's success.
Since 2013, thousands of young people have trained at Camp Liberty. Along the way, their families have become part of an extended community that spans the United States and around the world.
Whether your Challenger is attending Cadet Basic Training for the first time or returning for advanced leadership courses, you are part of the Camp Liberty family.
The Family Readiness Group provides a place where parents and supporters can share experiences, encourage one another, ask questions, and stay informed throughout the year.

Family Readiness Group Leader
The Family Readiness Group is led by Ms. Terri Rowe, whose dedication to supporting XMC families has made her a trusted resource for parents throughout the organization. Under her leadership, the FRG continues to strengthen the connection between Camp Liberty and the families who entrust us with their sons and daughters. Her service with Cadet programs began in 2008, when her son attended Cadet Basic Training.
"As the leader of the online Family Readiness Group, Terri helps guide parents through the oftentimes bureaucratic and confusing military environment, while keeping them focused on the reasoning behind our processes,” said Colonel Joseph M. Land, Sr., XMC, the Commander of Extreme Military Challenge! and President of Liberty Communications, LLC. “As the 'Goddess of the Parent's Guide,' with many years in support of the Army National Guard and Cadet programs, she is a critical part of the XMC team.”
A devoted wife, mother of two, and grandmother of three, she has recently retired from a career in Payroll Administration.

INTERPRETATION OF THE PARENTS' GUIDE: The XMC Parents' Guide is a very detailed and specific document, which must be followed to the letter. "Veteran Parents" (who have had a son or daughter earn the title of "Cadet") assist the "Recruit Parents" (especially those with no military experience) understand the importance and value of "attention to detail" when preparing for the Training Mission.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: The XMC Family - including alumni and parents of Cadets who "aged out" years ago - have always ensured that Independence Day is an extremely special day for our Challengers. Due to insurance restrictions, Liberty Communications, LLC, cannot spend corporate funds on fireworks. In response, the FRG raises funds for an impressive fireworks show to celebrate our nation's birth.
"ADOPTION" OF CHALLENGERS: The XMC Family often supports each other by "Tapping Out" Challengers who don't have famly at Friends and Family Night. Families also work together to allow theose Challengers without family at the Graduation Review to check-out "Battle Buddies" for Forlough. Details are explained in the Parents' Guide.
CHALLENGERS' FEAST: The Challengers' Feast is a long-standing XMC tradition dating back to our very first Training Mission. Parents are invited to host a special feast for all Cadets (not recruits). The feast is held on the Thursday evening prior to Graduation Review immediately following "The Gauntlet." The host unit is the Cadet Field Leader Course. The Challengers' Feast has become a favorite tradition—and it's their first opportunity during training to enjoy desserts and soft drinks. This is a 100% parent-led event.
